How much do Vet Techs Make?

Veterinary techs perform medical tests under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian to help diagnose the illness and injuries of animals. Being curious to know about the vet tech’s salary, I asked people about their pay scale. The reply puzzled me. Some vet techs were making $20 an hour while some could earn $100 an hour. We know that any salary payment depends upon your knowledge, qualification, skills, technical know-how, and most of all the experience. Vet tech’s salary is too not an exception. The same rule applies in this case too.

Again, if vet techs are working on their own, they will definitely make a handsome amount, around $500-$10,000 per week. Meanwhile, who work as employee earn quite low depending upon their degree, position level and work experience level. So let’s know a million dollar question, how much do vet techs make?

As per BLS, projected growth is 30% from 2012 to 2022. Earning in 2012 median pay is around is $84,800. It means Median pay is $30,290 per year that is $14.56 per hour. In May 2012, the median annual wage for all workers was $34,750. NAVTA’s 2011 survey says, “With the median annual income from full-time, year-round female workers in 2009 at $36,278 and $47127 for a male. Technicians are earning $1000 less annually than average American, although technicians rise in salary have consistently outpaced inflation.”

Veterinary assistants are animal caretakers. They care for the well-being of animals by performing routine tasks under the supervision of veterinarians, scientists, and veterinary technologists and technicians in the clinic. The same rule applies for vet techs' assistant as well in terms of salary and benefits just like vet techs. They earn $10 to $50 per hour depending on degree, experience level, and position level.

The Payment also depend on which field of veterinary medicine you work? Generally, if you work in small and companion animals like cat, dogs, rat you are likely to earn more than in the case of big cattle animals like cows, buffaloes. There are certain non-financial benefits that both vet tech and assistant get. In general benefits can include health insurance, pay time off, bonus, sick leave, profession liability insurance, professional continuing education and training to maintain the medical license.

Salary of both vet tech and assistant are quite lower at the entry level. Once you grow older in the organization, your salary range will rise higher and higher. Furthermore, improvement in your work and upgrading for higher level education will help increase your salary level. It will take a certain time for you to get the promotion. Once you are promoted, your pay will rise.

Another important factor in determining vet tech's and assistant salary is the location. One working in urban and large cities earn more. Of course, large cities have larger living expenses as well. Wealthier clients visit in big cities. On the other hand, rural and small area earn lower. Few people have little money. People in the rural area have lower income than urban. So this is the reason for lower or higher wages pay for different location.

In the same way, it is not a wonder for veterinary practices to offer very few benefits or poor benefits compared to many other industries.  There are many reasons for this including supplying the main economics that are not in favor of veterinary medicine. Other reason can be poor management in the hospital.

What you need to keep in mind is do not only compare the salary. A hospital may pay you $15 per hour with extra facilities, but other may pay $20 per hour with no additional benefits. In the case, the first options may be beneficial in terms of converting non-financial benefits into its respective value. Also, be careful about your contract that is make written contract on your own words about your pay, facilities and overtime work. Consult the lawyer as well to avoid any sorts of trouble.
