Learn about Blue Diamonds

Among all, blue diamond comes in the top list as one of the most desirable colors and also as the rarest one. Natural fancy colored diamonds are very rare and expensive. For illustration, The Hope diamond, which has been viewed in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., is the most famous blue diamond in the world. Moreover, it is also the largest blue diamond with 45.52 carats.

Natural blue diamond’s jewelry are so rare that most jewelers have never seen one, and will never own one. Recently, for last few years, processes and methods have been applied in producing intensely colored blue diamonds and blue diamond jewelry. It is believed that the process probably recreates conditions which existed millions of years ago to produce natural and fancy colored stones. The treatment can only work with a small minority of diamonds, and involves irradiation them causing the color change, usually followed by heat treatment to stabilize the color.

Everyone must have heard the breaking news of the attempted Millennium Dome Diamond Robbery. Taking back to the history, there was an attempt to steal 12 large diamonds valued at a total of pound 200 million, an average of over pound 16 million each. The most important fact is that eleven out of the twelve diamonds were fancy colored blue diamonds! The twelfth (non-blue) diamond weighed 203 carats.

Natural blue diamond’s remain so rare, that it’s next to impossible to find any. Talking about price, fancy blue diamond’s rings and blue diamond jewelry are more expensive than ordinary near-colorless ones. The processing adds to the cost of the blue diamond jewelry (i.e. pendants, necklace, rings, earrings and so on), so it is generally only worth treating diamonds of high clarity. The diamonds selected for treatment usually start off a one of the less desirable colors such as brown or yellow. There is no certainty about the final color that any particular stone will be after treatment.
