Tips about Diamond Color

The surprising fact about the diamond  is that it has no hue or color. The color of a diamond can either be detracted from or enhanced from its value that entirely depends in the hue and intensity for a diamond’s coloration. In reality, the diamond color actually means lack of colors. The diamond color evaluation is based on the absence of color.

You can find the diamond in the different color like steel, gray, white, blue, yellow, orange, red, green, pink, purple, brown and black. Fancy colorful diamonds contain interstitial impurities or structural defects as a side effect of coloration. On the other hand, pure diamonds are perfectly colorless and transparent.

Like color of water, as mentioned earlier a chemically pure and structurally perfect diamond is colorless material, the diamond color is classified into various grading, grading the whiteness of a diamond. The chart given below shows the diamond colors and grading.

A color d is the highest possible while ‘Z’ is the lowest. The Blue Nile only sells diamonds with a color grade of j or higher. Color manifests itself in a diamond as a pale yellow. Thus, for this reason, the diamond's color grade is based on its lack of color. Lesser the color a diamond has, the higher is its color grade and vice-versa. The selection of diamond at secondary level depends on its color. Meanwhile, it primarily depends on its cut. Thus, color is the major factor for selection of any diamonds. The reason behind this is that human eye tends to detect a diamond’s sparkle (light performance) at first and color at second.

How to select the correct color?

  • ·         Select G-I with a near-colorless grade for an excellent value in a diamond with little or no noticeable color to the unaided eye.
  • ·         Select a colorless diamond with a grade of D-F for a diamond with no discernible color , if you want the purist.
